Norway
2000
by ER

Our first trip was so successful; we
thought we would try two trips in one year, so our second trip
in 2000 was to Norway where we stayed in Vos, at the Fleicher’s
Hotel overlooking Vangs Lake. The meals were an
experience in themselves including many delicacies such as Cloud
Berry pudding and an exceptional buffet from the sea with about
50 kinds of fish cooked or smoked or raw in a beautiful array.
The hotel also had its own night club with a dance floor that
set the expectation for many a trip.

We visited a stave church where wooden
footings still stand as a testament to the ingenuity of the
early Norwegian builders.

A trip to Bergen included the harbor area
with the old town cobblestone streets and warehouses.
We
visited the home Troldhaugen, and museum honoring Norway’s
foremost Romantic composer, Edvard Grieg, the little troll and
his wife.

Of course, a trip to Norway would not be
complete without a cruise through the Fjords viewing the rounded
hills and water floes that provide much of Norway’s hydro power
hidden in the interiors of the hills.

Several of us went on a
kayaking expedition on our free day and were treated to a trek
across a calm clear lake...

...to an island where our guide fixed us a
near gourmet meal over a small gas camp stove.
Throughout the week we were reminded by our
campus director to take our umbrellas wherever we went, but it
never rained on us while we were out and about touring villages
and lakes. It was a memorable trip for a small band of
travelers!
