York, Pennsylvania
May, 2005
by VS

It is incredible how much York, Pennsylvania has to offer for
every taste and interest! Historically,
of course, York is known as the area to which the Continental
Congress fled for nine months when the British occupied
Philadelphia during the Revolution. Buildings from that
time survive, as well as a replica of the courthouse where the
Articles of Confederation were signed. Picturesque
examples of architecture from every period make downtown York a
delight to explore, and we took full advantage of it, with a
tour of the early structures, a talk by historian James McClure
(author of Nine Months In York Town), a stroll to view the
many murals on buildings throughout downtown and a guided
architectural walking tour.

Just as interesting is York's more recent history as an industrial
powerhouse. A fascinating glimpse into their productive past can be had at
The Agriculture and Industrial Museum, a good introduction to the history of the
actual factory
tours that we would shortly take.

And what
wonderful tours they were! We delved onto the operating
factory floors of many
industries, including the Harley Davidson Motorcycle plant, the
Wilton Armetale Foundry, the Pfaltzgraff Company, Wolfgang
Candy, and Family Heirloom Weavers, among others. For
those with a more rural bent, there were visits to the many
markets of the area, a tour and wine tasting at Naylor Wine
Cellars and a visit to Hope Acres Dairy Farm, one of 10 fully
robotic dairy farms in the U.S. Incredibly, the entire
milking process there is automated; the farmer doesn't even have
to be there unless the robot calls his cell phone to report a
problem!
Place
all this intellectual stimulation in the idyllic surroundings of
beautiful Pennsylvania, add fascinating companions and good
food, and you have a perfectly memorable vacation.
Hopefully we'll gather again to travel another part of the U.S.,
but this inaugural excursion will be hard to beat!
